Writing task 2 is the second part involved in the writing module of IELTS. About a span of 40 minutes is required to be spent on the completion of whole Writing task 2. Moreover, there is a specific pattern that is advised to be followed while writing the introduction of writing task 2.
The pattern is as follows:
- General line
- Rephrasing the question statement
- Thesis statement
The structure of writing task 2 is almost the same as task 1. Just like task 1, IELTS students need to give an effective introduction to the given topic in the beginning followed by Body paragraph one, Body paragraph two
explaining the answer to the question being asked in the question statement, at last, a final conclusion is drawn in the form of an opinion or as an abstract of whole data content.
There are about 7 types of questions that are usually asked in writing task 2 of IELTS.
But, before having a look at all of them. Let’s first discuss about pattern of introduction:
It is a simple statement that is related to a specific topic exposing its link with the outer world. It can be a universal truth or a simple phrase also.
Rephrasing question statement:
Rephrasing means molding the question stated in your own language or simple words without imitating the words being written in the question so stated.
It is the most prominent factor of introduction without which the introduction of task 2 is incomplete. In the thesis statement, students usually disclose what they are going to discuss in upcoming body paragraph of the task in a single line.
Now let’s discuss about the various types of questions being asked in exams and the best way of attempting them all:
TYPE 1 of the questions being asked in Writing task 2
AGREE OR DISAGREE (fully agree or fully disagree): In an agree or disagree type question, you will be asked to favor or stand against the statement being given in the question. So, it is always up to you either you agree or disagree with the statement but you have to mention clear reasons for your stand.
- If you stand in favour of the statement than your essay of Writing task 2 (body paragraph 1 and 2) must include only those points that show a favour towards the question statement.
- Do not include any disagreement point in your essay.
- Same is in the case of Against, if you disagree then accomplish your essay focussing on against points and do not add favourable points merely to enhance the length of your essay.
PARTIALLY AGREE AND DISAGREE:
This is another type of agreement disagreement essay. Students of IELTS usually come across a statement containing ‘to what extent do you agree or disagree’ line. Under this type, you are not asked to fully agree or disagree but you have to share your views on both sides that is favor and against both.
IELTS aspirants are asked to follow a 70-30 approach under this type of question. Their content should be majorly based on one side but they have to put in contrary side points also in their essay.
For example, if you are a proponent (agreed) to a statement then you have to explain three to four points of agreement in the first paragraph. However, in the second paragraph you have to explain at least one to two points of paradoxical side also
This is called a 70-30 approach.
Type 2 of the questions being asked in Writing task 2
DISCUSS BOTH VIEWS PLUS GIVE YOUR OPINION: Under this type of question being asked in IELTS Writing task 2. You are bound to write about two different views given in the question plus in the end, you are supposed to wind up your essay by providing a personal opinion on the given topic.
For example– In the question, it will be given that
some people think that sports should be eliminated from school so that students can pay full attention to their education but others say that it will only make them book worms, rather sports assist students in being active in their studies.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion also.
Here, in body paragraph 1 you will write about views of people who stand against sports while in body paragraph 2 you have to write about individuals who favored the involvement of sports in children’s education.
Next, you have to provide a clear-cut opinion based upon your own thinking in the concluding paragraph, at last.
Always remember that in this type of question where the views of people with respect to a particular topic are given. Therefore, before beginning the writing part just analyze properly either the negative approach of the public towards a topic is given first or is it a positive one. Like in the above question negative response of individuals towards sports is provided.
So, in the first body paragraph of your essay you have to mention points against sports and in the second body paragraph you will write the positive prospective of people towards sports.
Type 3 of the questions being asked in Writing task 2
DISCUSS BOTH VIEWS: In this type, you are asked to simply mention or explain about views of the general public only about a particular topic and there is no need to write your personal opinion in the concluding paragraph. Besides, you have to write a fair conclusion based upon the body paragraph 1 and body paragraph 2
Further, in order to make it clear let’s have a glance over the example given above in type 2 of Writing task 2.
You have to write points regarding people favoring sports in body paragraph 1 and persons against sports in body paragraph 2.
In the last paragraph, you have to write a final conclusion on the basis of body paragraphs 1 and 2.
Type 4 of questions being asked in Writing task 2
CAUSES/PROBLEMS AND SOLUTION: In this type of task 2 being asked in the exam, you have to write about the causes of a matter accompanied by the ultimate solutions to solve it.
So, what you have to do is-
- Mention the causes for the problem in body paragraph 1
- Provide solutions to the problem in body paragraph 2.
such as- In many nations the number of cybercrimes is increasing steadily. Give reasons and solutions to the problem.
Now, how you have to perform this task is
To disclose all relevant reasons and causes that give a boost to the rise in the number of cybercrime rates in body paragraph 1. Instead, disseminate clear solutions about ‘how to control it and diminish the cybercrime rate’ in body paragraph 2.
As usual in the last, you have to give an effective conclusion of your report.
Type 5 of questions being asked in Writing task 2
TWO QUESTIONS TYPE TASK:
In this type of task, you have to clearly give answer to the first question in body paragraph 1 and provide answer for the secondary questions in body paragraph 2.
For example- As most people spend a major part of their adult life at work. so, job satisfaction is an important element of individual wellbeing.
What factors contribute to job satisfaction? How realistic is the expectation of job satisfaction for all workers?
So, while answering the above questions you have to answer the first question in the first paragraph and of the second question in the second paragraph.
Eventually, put the pen down after providing a suitable conclusion to this.
Topic 6 of questions being asked in Writing task 2

For example- Money influences the purchasing power of the people.

So, In body paragraph 1, write some points of either you agree or disagree.
In body paragraph 2, continue your arguments and put some more points of agreement and disagreement
In the last paragraph, write a conclusion including the restatement of your opinion.
