Spread the word

ACADEMIC IELTS WRITING: Bar graph is a common form of task that is asked in academic IELTS under the writing section. In this article, we are going to learn about the description of a bar graph in the IELTS exam along with some common sentences that you may also use in your exam to elevate your bands in IELTS writing. Before going towards the actual description of the BAR GRAPH,  let’s have a fair glance at the pattern you have to follow in IELTS writing task 1.

OVERALL

  •  OVERVIEW is always written before initiating body paragraphs. But OVERALL is always written at the end. In both of these, a suitable conclusion is drawn, however, we can not write the word CONCLUSION or TO BE CONCLUDED in their place.

So, let’s begin with our actual ACADEMIC IELTS WRITING. For this, we will take a bar graph as an example for making everything crystal clear to you and that would make it more easier to understand.

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010

PARAPHRASING (ACADEMIC IELTS WRITING)

The vertical bar graph disseminates information about physiological activities performed by Australians lying in 15 to 60 and over age groups in the year 2010. Data is calibrated in percentage. while paraphrasing introduction here:

Important tips for paraphrasing:

  • Use the last sentence as it is written above, in your exam, to show that in what terms the data has been presented (Data has been calibrated ….)

Now, let’s move towards body paragraph1.

  • Students need to keep in mind that the length of body paragraph 1 and body paragraph 2 should be almost equal to each other. It adds to your scores in terms of presentation.

BODY PARAGRAPH 1(ACADEMIC IELTS WRITING)

It can be clearly seen from this statistical figure that at least 40% of men of all age groups were involved in physical exercises in 2010 except the populace of men with 35 to 44 years of age that count to 1% less than others doing exercises. While, on the contrary side, women with the same age group were keenly interested in workout activities with near about 52% of their population.

Important tips about BODY PARAGRAPH 1.

(ACADEMIC IELTS WRITING)

  1. Start with a general line…( it can be seen from the statistical figure that…..)
  2.  Try to do comparisons as much as you can, only then you can make a suitable and influential sentence out of it.
  3. Comparisons even help you in contracting the huge content because it is not easy to explain every single bit of data.
  4.  Use connectors, linkers like I have used (while) to show other/opposite side of data. Use adverbs like (near about 52%)
  5. Do not mention numbers alone, try to write an adverb to make it more descriptive.

BODY PARAGRAPH 2(ACADEMIC IELTS WRITING)

Further, approximately half of the females of working and retirement age groups between 35 to 64 age were regular in doing physical exercises daily. However, the female that belong to the 15 to 34 age group and the old ones with 65 and over age had shown less number in doing body exercises with solely 47% to 48 % of their masses. To be noticed, there was a negligible difference of solely 1% between the proportion of males and females doing exercises, coming under the old age group.

Important tips about BODY PARAGRAPH 2

(ACADEMIC IELTS WRITING)

  1. Now start body paragraph 2 with a mandatory connector like( further )
  2. There is no need to show the exact number or % every time. Instead, we can use adverbs again like approximately half, solely etcetera.
  3.  Try to manipulate data. For example- there was a negligible difference of one percent.
  4. No need to mention the total count of both males and females that is 47% and 48%

OVERALL(ACADEMIC IELTS WRITING)

Overall, the females of Australia participating in regular physical activities were quite large in number as compared to Australian men.

Important tips about OVERALL (ACADEMIC IELTS WRITING)

  • Start with the suitable word( that is overall). To make it clear that a small conclusion about the task has been drawn in overall, write the most highlighted point about the data after taking everything into account.
  • The actual idea that strikes the mind after reading all things about data. That is your overall.

At last, I would like to suggest some linkers and connectors that can be used in task 1. to make more reliable.

Later on                                                          Secondly                                                Nextly     Further

Thereafter                                Furthermore                 After that                                       Moreover
